If you’re looking for an action-packed thriller mixing Bond themes with Mad Max: Fury Road, this is definitely the film for you. Lorraine Broughton (Charlize Theron) plays an undercover MI6 agent sent to Berlin during the Cold War to investigate the murder of a fellow agent and recover a missing list of double agents. Meeting several problems along the way, she manages to cleverly fight it out in a ladylike fashion, with James McAvoy and Sofia Boutella starring in this spectacular non-stop mystery.
What stands out about this film is how intense the action scenes are. These aren’t just any old action scenes – Lorraine and the antagonists look physically in pain in these gruesome stand-offs. This comes as no surprise as the film’s director, David Leitch, coordinated stunts in the likes of Fight Club, X-Men and 300. It’s worth seeing this just for the intense scene on the stairs mid-way through, during which Theron allegedly cracked two of her teeth. She even had EIGHT personal trainers to help master her extremely physical performance.
The film plays out in a non-linear narrative, so it jumps back between Lorraine’s story and the past, which at times can be difficult to wrap your head around and figure out who you’re supposed to be rooting for, so you really need to pay attention (especially at the end!). That aside, it’s great to see a strong female lead who manages to escape by the skin of her teeth in the face of adversity. For amazing stunts, a beautiful cocktail of neon & neutral colour palettes and an impressive group of actors, go and see this film!
