When it comes to ‘beauty pageants’, what type of girl comes to mind? A stereotypical, tall, skinny, and flawless girl and usually blonde. Everyone thinks the physical aspect of beauty is what pageants or competitions are based on but in fact, there’s much more to it. Beauty is simply in the eye of the beholder, this means we all have different ideas of what beauty is.
An example of a competition that looks at other aspects is Miss Bolton and Bury. This consists of different stages in order to find the person who isn’t just the prettiest but also someone who would be a good role model for young girls. The number one reason girls take part is to gain more confidence, does that surprise you? Their activity day gives you an opportunity to meet many girls around Bolton and Bury which you end up becoming friends with for life! As the exercises are there to help you grow as a person, it broadens your horizons and could potentially help you in ways you would never think of.
Another reason why girls enter is simply due to the fact they want to know how to help charities and raise money for a good cause. Another stage of the competition is raising money for a charity, involving the community and being recognised for it. You don’t only get an award for looking great but there are other prizes for raising money for charity, if you’re big on social media there’s a title you could win based on likes, if you like doing things with your community there’s been the recent addition of the ‘community award’ and then there’s the overall winner. This consists of the money you raised, how you’ve made people aware on social media, what you’ve done in your community and then how you’ve come across as a person.
Experience before this is not necessary, it is there to give you that experience you need and will help you be whatever you want to be and how you want to be as a person. It can also develop your confidence in yourself as the catwalk show allows you to put yourself out there in the comfort of your own clothes.
Miss Bolton and Bury is there for 5 reasons:
So don’t hesitate choosing something out of your comfort zone as it could benefit you more than you think.
