Some of you might have been wondering, what are these mysterious orange bikes riding around Manchester and Salford? Well, these ‘Mobike’s’ are part of a new bike-sharing scheme. But, are they worth the ride?
They’re cheap and easy
Besides the £49 deposit, operating costs are pretty cheap at 50p every 30 minutes. Everything is done on the app, on any smartphone with a GPS tracker. These are perfect for making short trips around Manchester/Salford, especially during rush hour traffic AND with the new cycle lanes on Oxford Road. They’re also dockless and lock automatically, so gone are the days of finding somewhere to deposit your bike! They’re so simple in fact, that the scheme’s UK general manager, Steve Pyer said, ‘4,000 trips are made every day, even when it’s raining!’
If you treat it well, it treats you well
When you begin the scheme you start with 100 points. If you park them in authorised bike parking spots, you’ll be rewarded. But, if you park them in the wrong place, you’ll be charged more to hire them. It basically rewards loyalty and punishes selfishness.
They’re not quite everywhere
To admit, the scheme has only been running for 5 months, so only 1,000 have been launched. But, users have noted having to search for the bikes for over 15 minutes on the app or reported finding them vandalised. So, are they really as ‘indestructible’ as their designers claim?
They don’t fit all shapes and sizes
Lucky for those under 6ft.
Not the best option if you’re in a rush
Unless your destination is nearby. It only uses a single gear, so if you’re in a rush, the airless tyres mixed with this low gear will leave you pedalling right and left like Road Runner from Looney Tunes!
So, jury’s out! Have a try and let us know what you think.
