Xplode Music Review

Meet the super talented 20-year-old Jorja Smith who went from making frappuccinos at Starbucks to being rumoured to be dating Drake! The ‘Blue Lights’ singer racked up 100,000 plays in a week after releasing the song onto SoundCloud last year and is about police injustice and her experiences while growing up in Walsall. Her music has a bluesy, Amy Winehouse-esque feeling to it and her voice is absolutely captivating, which rightfully caught the attention of Stormzy, Drake (of course) and Skrillex. It’s safe to say that after this moment Jorja didn’t need to be making flat whites anymore! Throughout her childhood, Jorja has been surrounded and influenced by her band member father and the reggae music that always seemed to be played while her mum was cooking. Her music has been greatly recognised, notably by being shortlisted on the BBC Music Sound of 2017 ‘ones to watch’ list, following in the footsteps of Years & Years, Sam Smith and Ellie Goulding. We’re yet to see Jorja’s debut album, so hopefully, it will be released later this year with many eagerly anticipating its arrival!

Calvin Harris is back! Gone are the days where it was ‘acceptable in the 80s’ as Calvin’s new album is worlds apart featuring collabs with Nicki Minaj, Frank Ocean, Migos, Future and many more! His recently released album, ‘Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 1,’ has a fitting title, expect to turn up the feel good and funky beats. It features ‘Slide’, a strong contender for 2017’s song of the summer, and ‘Heatstroke’ featuring Pharrell Williams. This Album is our perfect Summer throwback.
